Preparing for Spring Weather-Storm Sirens

Outdoor Waning Sirens:

  • The City of Ozark maintains and operates 8 storm sirens which are strategically located throughout the City.
  • The primary reason for the existence of these sirens is to alert any citizen that is outside a building of a potential situation, so that they may seek shelter and obtain additional information via radio, televised or other communication.
  • The sirens are equipped with a receiver and are activated via radio wave signals.
  • The sirens are programmed to run continuously for 3 minutes, followed by a 10 minute pause.
  • If an eminent threat remains in the area after the ten minute pause the sirens will be activated once again.
  • This process will continue until there is no longer an eminent threat in the area.

The Warning Sirens will be Activated When:

  • National Weather Service issues a TORNADO WARNING with the Christian County in the warned polygon and in the path of the storm.
  • A trained spotter reports Rotation, Funnel Cloud, or Tornado in the county. This may include storms tracking towards the Christian County from any adjacent counties.
  • National Weather Service issues a THUNDERSTORM WARNING producing life threatening winds approximately 75 mph or greater.
  • A trained spotter reports life threatening winds approximately 75 mph our greater in or approaching the Christian County.
